We specialize in Emotionally Focused Therapy with an emphasis on Trauma.

At Playground of Life Psychotherapy, Inc., we integrate trauma-informed care and attachment theory to guide assessment, formulation, and treatment of depression, anxiety, relationship distress, and related mental health symptoms. This combined orientation shapes how we understand clients’ difficulties, how we intervene, and how we structure the therapeutic environment.

Core principles we apply

  • Safety and stabilization: We prioritize emotional and physical safety before progressing to deeper processing. This includes pacing, grounding skills, and collaborative agreements about session content and boundaries.

  • Collaboration and empowerment: Clients are invited to co-create goals and treatment plans. We emphasize choice, informed consent, and developing self-efficacy to reduce retraumatization and support recovery.

  • Attunement and relational repair: Therapy is delivered with consistent, empathic attunement. We use the therapeutic relationship as a corrective emotional experience to rebuild trust and repair ruptures.

  • Strengths- and resilience-focused stance: We identify existing coping strategies and supports, validate survival responses, and build on strengths to increase adaptive functioning.

  • Whole-person, somatic awareness: We include attention to body sensations and nervous-system regulation because trauma and attachment disruptions are embodied; somatic interventions are used alongside talk therapy.

Specific techniques and modalities we use

  • Somatic interventions: Grounding, body scans, polyvagal-informed exercises, movement, and titrated resourcing to stabilize dysregulated nervous-system responses.

  • Attachment-based interventions: Mentalization enhancement, reflective functioning exercises, emotion coaching, and reparative enactments in-session to shift internal working models.

  • Trauma processing modalities: Trauma-focused CBT, exposure-based work when safe, and somatic processing techniques tailored to the client’s regulation capacity.

  • Skills training: Mindfulness, distress tolerance, affect regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and communication skills for relationships.

  • Couples and family interventions: Attachment-focused family therapy, structured repair routines, and communication skills to reduce escalation and deepen secure connection.

Outcomes we aim for

  • Reduced core symptoms of depression and anxiety through improved regulation, cognitive reframing, and behavioral activation aligned with attachment needs.

  • Improved relational functioning: clearer expression of needs, more effective boundaries, fewer destructive cycles, and increased capacity for intimacy and trust.

  • Greater self-cohesion and narrative integration: clients develop a coherent sense of self and adaptive relationship models, reducing shame and self-blame.

  • Increased resilience and relapse prevention through skills, supports, and somatic resources that sustain gains over time.
